Research
The school seeks to build, sustain and enhance research into social, cultural, literary and policy questions of major real world significance. It specialises in European history, politics, international relations, literature, culture and social and criminological research. We have the highest proportion of research active academics of any school in the university. For more than a decade our research has been ranked as having international impact in the UK research assessment exercise. In RAE 2008 staff from the school were submitted to the following units of assessment: English Language and Literature; Social Work and Social Policy; Culture Communication and Media; European Studies and Library and Information Management. More than 75% of our work was classed as international quality.
We have a thriving postgraduate research community and a vibrant graduate school where students undertake modules from our MRes degree either as part of the degree or to enhance their research skills as part of their PhD or MPhil degrees.
Each research centre hosts a series of seminars where internal and speakers present their research. In addition a number of workshops and conferences are organised by academics from the school.
