My research focuses on onomastics, semantics, and the history and lexicography of English and Scots. I am also interested in perceptions of Scots and Scottish English, particularly in the wake of devolution. Before coming to Salford in 2008, I worked as a historical lexicographer for ten years, originally for the Historical Thesaurus of English at the University of Glasgow (where I did my first and second degrees), then the Oxford English Dictionary, and most recently Scottish Language Dictionaries in Edinburgh. During this time I have also taught a range of subjects relating to the historical and modern linguistics of English and Scots at the University of Glasgow, the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and the University of Edinburgh’s Department of Celtic and Scottish Studies.

Supervision

I am keen to hear from prospective PhD students interested in the history of English and Scots lexis, historical lexicography, prescriptivism, lexical semantics, place-names and personal names.
