Centre for European Security
The main aim of this Centre is to bring together scholars with a research interest in European security.
In recent years, various security issues such as terrorism, nuclear proliferation and climate change have risen to the top of the political agenda of many governments in Europe and have focused the attention of an increasing number of scholars. At the same time, the increasing availability of official documents has also allowed historians to re-examine the interpretation of important past events relating to the security of European states, but also previous relations between those states.
The Centre builds on the active research programme provided by the European Security, Terrorism and Intelligence network at the University of Salford. Since 2007, it has aimed to transcend disciplinary boundaries in order to examine security, terrorism and intelligence issues together, in both their historical and contemporary dimensions. Building upon existing strengths within history, contemporary security, terrorism and intelligence studies, the Centre acts as a focal point for research into the past and present of European security. Members’ work is not confined to the geographic boundaries of Europe, but encompasses the continent’s global engagement on security issues with other regions of the world, such as America, the Middle East, Asia and Africa. In recent years, Salford has earned a reputation in the field of intelligence, security, strategic and war studies.
The Centre’s membership encompasses full-time members of the staff at the University of Salford from the schools of Languages, Law and English, Sociology, Politics and Contemporary History. A number of doctoral students working on projects of direct relevance to the Centre’s agenda are associate members of the Centre. In addition, the Centre has continued the policy of the former European Studies Research Institute and periodically elects its own Research Fellows who receive invitations to workshops and conferences sponsored by the Centre and cooperate with Centre members on projects.
