Short introductory paragraph (research, publication and other interests):

Dr. Christian Kaunert is Senior Lecturer in EU Politics & International Relations, and currently Marie Curie (Senior) Research Fellow at the European University Institute Florence. He joined the Politics and Contemporary History Subject Group, School of Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences, University of Salford, Greater Manchester, in January 2007.
Christian holds a Ph.D in International Politics & an MSc in European Politics from the University in Wales Aberystwyth, a BA (Hons) European Business from Dublin City University, ESB Reutlingen and a BA (Hons) Open University. Christian has researched and taught in many international departments, such as Aberystwyth (Wales), ULB Brussels (Belgium, 2004, UACES Research Fellow), Maastrict (Netherlands), Salford (England), EUI Florence (Marie Curie Fellowship), as well as a guest professor in Barcelona (Spain), Turin (Italy), Yerevan (Armenia, at the UNDP mission), Cairo (Egypt), and Jinan (China). He is the author of several articles on EU Justice and Home Affairs, EU counter-terrorism, EU asylum and migration, and wider EU global security matters. His articles have appeared in journals, such as European Security, Journal of European Integration, Journal of European Public Policy, Terrorism and Political Violence, Studies in Conflict and Terrorism, Perspectives on European Politics and Society, European Political Science, and the Journal of Contemporary European Research. His monograph 'European Internal Security: towards supranational goverance' has been published with Manchester University Press, whilst a few more monographs have been contracted. He is appointed editor of the Journal of Contemporary European Research (JCER) and a member of the executive committee of UACES. He has frequently commented for UK and international media (Al-Jazeera, USA Today) on terrorism issues. Christian has also developed the new MA Terrorism and Security programme with Sarah Leonard.

Christian is currently engaged in three main research projects. The first project focuses on the role of European Union institutions in EU Justice and Home Affairs.
The second project, with Sarah Leonard, focuses on the external dimension of the European Union’s counter-terrorism cooperation.
The third research project, funded by a generous Marie Curie Research Fellowship at the EUI Florence, examines the development and impact of EU agencies in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice, with a specific focus on EUROPOL, EUROJUST, and the EU’s External Borders Agency FRONTEX.
Christian convenes the ESTI (European Security, Terrorism and Intelligence) seminar series, with Sarah Leonard and Christopher J. Murphy.
